Poliomyelitis

Term

Acute viral disease caused by the poliomyelitis virus. It is characterized by CNS damage, especially of the anterior horns of the spinal cord, meninges of the brain and spinal cord, and sometimes lymphoid tissue and gastrointestinal tract. Non-paralytic – a form of acute serous meningitis. Paralytic is characterized by damage to the motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord, leading to peripheral paralysis.
