Myosin

Term

This is a protein of muscle fiber contraction. Its molecule consists of two polypeptide chains forming an α helix. Mol. mass about – 470,000. It makes up 40-60% of all muscle proteins. When combined with actin, it forms actomyosin – the main protein of the muscle contraction system. It is characterized by the activity of adenosine triphosphatase: it converts the chemical energy of ATP into the mechanical energy of muscle contraction. There is about 1 g of myosin in one cm3 of muscle.
