Total protein indicator is determined by evaluating the patient’s nutritional status and edema. This indicator is often determined as one of the parameters to assess the patient’s overall condition. Serum protein concentration depends on the synthesis and degradation of albumins and globulins. Proteins in the blood perform detoxification, transport, and immune functions. They act as hormones, enzymes, and metabolism regulators. In inflammation, the concentration of albumin decreases slightly while the concentration of globulins increases. In this situation, the total protein concentration may remain unchanged.
