Retropharyngeal abscess is an infection of the neck when pus forms between the prevertebral fascia and the muscles used for swallowing. Although this condition is rare, it is more common in children and can be life-threatening if detected too late. In children under 2 years old, the disease manifests non-specifically with fever and refusal to eat. The diagnosis is confirmed by neck computed tomography. It is treated with intravenous antibiotics and surgical drainage of the abscess.
