Carcinoid syndrome occurs when serotonin and other vasoactive peptides from a carcinoid tumor enter the bloodstream. Carcinoid syndrome is characterized by diarrhea and flushing of the skin. The syndrome may also be accompanied by symptoms such as wheezing, palpitations, and abdominal pain.
