Diarrhea – frequent bowel movements. When having diarrhea, the stool can be liquid and copious (more than 250 g per day), there may be a small amount of liquid stool or it can be normal. Diarrhea is caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, food poisoning, chemicals, medications, nervous disorders, inflammation, cancerous processes. Acute diarrhea lasts up to 10 days. Chronic diarrhea can last for a week, several months, or years. Acute diarrhea is life-threatening because the body loses a lot of fluids and salts.
