Sulfogalactosylceramides (sulfatides) are formed by linking galactosylceramide to 3ꞌ-phosphoadenosine-5ꞌ-phosphosulfate (PAPS, “active sulfate”). PAPS is also involved in the synthesis of other sulfolipids, such as sulfo-(galacto)glycerolipids and sulfosteroids. Sulfolipids are not abundant. They are found in the white matter of mammalian brains.
