Pseudohyponatremia

Term

Pseudohyponatremia. Sometimes a low sodium concentration is characteristic of patients with hyperproteinemia or hyperlipoproteinemia and hyperglycemia. When the levels of proteins or lipoproteins and glucose increase (or all together), a large part of the plasma is occupied, leaving less space for water, therefore it appears that the sodium level is reduced, although it is normal. This pseudo-hyponatremia can be detected by measuring serum osmolality, which is normal. Knowing the concentrations of glucose and urea, the sodium concentration can be calculated.
