Peroxidases
These are enzymes (EC 1.11.17) that require hydrogen peroxide or organic peroxides for their action. They are hemoproteins that catalyze reactions of hydrogen peroxide with many donors:
Donor + H2O2 → oxidized donor + 2 H2O.
The organism’s protection against toxic active oxygen forms is related to specific enzymes present in all cells: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, as well as antioxidants.
A – a compound capable of oxidation or reduction.
Glutathione peroxidase is especially important.
