Peristalsis

Term

Rhythmic, ring-like contractions of the smooth muscles of tubular organs, pushing the contents of the organs. Peristalsis is characteristic and important for the digestive tract, as it pushes the food content. Peristalsis accelerates when there is a disturbance in nervous and humoral regulation. Constant tension, fear, and other negative emotions reflexively inhibit peristalsis, stopping gastric juice secretion.
