Natriuresis

Term

This is the excretion of sodium with urine. In a day, a healthy person excretes about 25 g of inorganic substances with urine, including sodium – 130-261 mmol. Sodium ions freely pass from blood plasma to primary urine. Sodium is intensively reabsorbed in the renal tubules, and only about 1% of the plasma amount is excreted in the final urine. The excretion of sodium is controlled by the adrenal cortex hormone aldosterone, but non-aldosterone mechanisms of sodium urez regulation are also possible. Changes in the ratio of sodium entering and leaving the body disrupt sodium homeostasis. Fluid excess or dehydration in the body and other effects systematically alter the retention or excretion of sodium with urine. More sodium is excreted with urine as the circulating blood volume increases.
