The human fetus is a stage of human development between the embryo and the newborn. The perinatal period lasts from the 22nd week of pregnancy to 7 days after birth. A fetus weighing 500 g and measuring 35 cm, formed to be able to exist independently and adapt to the environment, is considered a 22-week-old fetus. A fetus separated from the mother (by cutting the umbilical cord) is called a newborn. A newborn born at 39-40 weeks of pregnancy is considered full-term, at 23-38 weeks – preterm, born after 42 weeks of pregnancy – post-term. Perinatal mortality includes stillbirths and deaths of newborns within the first 7 days of life.
