Fructokinase
Term
Fructokinase. This specific enzyme (EC 2.7.1.4) exhibits properties typical of glucokinase and hexokinase. Insulin activates it, while glucose-6-phosphate inhibits it. The enzyme has a low Km for fructose, meaning it has a very high affinity for fructose. Liver cells lack enzymes that convert fructose-1-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate, so aldolase B cleaves fructose-1-phosphate as follows:
D-fructose-1-phosphate -> glyceraldehyde + dihydroxyacetone phosphate.
