Fibrinolysis

Term

The process during which fibrin clot is degraded by thrombin (EC 3.4.21.5) is called fibrinolysis – proteolysis. In the human and animal body, this is carried out by the protease – plasmin (EC 3.4.21.7). Plasmin in the blood is in the inactive form of plasminogen. During activation, 25% of amino acid residues are released from plasminogen. The fibrin clot, catalyzed by plasmin, slowly dissolves because water-soluble hydrolysis products – peptides are formed from it. Initially, early products are formed, which later break down into final ones.
