Enterotoxins

Term

These are exotoxins (toxins released), released in the small intestine. They usually cause fluid flow into the intestinal cavity, leading to diarrhea. Enterotoxins are produced by many bacteria that contaminate food: Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus, and intestinal pathogens Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteridis (see more in Bacterial toxins).
