Cytokines

Term

These are soluble hormones of the immune system. Cytokines activate the immune system. This is a very large group of protein substances that coordinate immune reactions. Their immune response regulatory system – the “cytokine network” – connects cytokine-producing cells and target cells (i.e. cells with specific cytokine receptors). It is possible to use them by inserting cytokines encoding genes directly into a patient’s tumors.
