Adrenal glands

Term

It is a paired organ about 4.5´3´0.6 cm in size, located above both kidneys, producing many hormones. These are endocrine glands. The adrenal glands are composed of two layers (structures) – the cortex and the medulla. The adrenal cortex secretes corticosteroids – glucocorticoids (cortisol), mineralocorticoids (aldosterone), and sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). The medulla secretes catecholamines: dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline.
