Actinomycosis

Term

This is chronic purulent granulomatous disease, manifesting with multiple organ abscesses and most commonly affecting the face, neck (in 65% of cases), and gastrointestinal tract. The pathogen can be a component of the normal endogenous microflora or enter from the environment through the respiratory tract or gastrointestinal tract. It easily penetrates the body tissues. It can exist as a saprophyte in tonsillar crypts and carious teeth.
