Polydipsia refers to excessive thirst and an abnormally high intake of fluids. Individuals with polydipsia feel the need to drink large amounts of water frequently, regardless of their actual hydration status. Common symptoms include persistent dry mouth, frequent urination (often associated with polyuria), and a constant sensation of thirst. Polydipsia can result from conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, dehydration, high salt intake, or certain psychiatric disorders like psychogenic polydipsia. Correctly diagnosing and addressing the underlying cause is essential for managing polydipsia effectively.
