A passing cough is a sudden respiratory tract response to irritation, aimed at removing accumulated secretions, pus, foreign bodies, irritating substances, or microbes. During coughing, one takes a deep inhalation and forcefully exhales through a closed glottis, then the glottis opens, and another inhalation follows. Coughing can be voluntary or involuntary. Frequent coughing usually indicates a respiratory tract disease.
