Itching of the anus, also known as pruritus ani, refers to an uncomfortable, irritating sensation around the anal area that compels a person to scratch. This symptom can result from a variety of conditions, and typically worsens at night or after bowel movements. Common causes include:
- Hemorrhoids: Swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum or anus.
- Anal fissures: Small tears in the lining of the anus.
- Skin conditions: Such as eczema or psoriasis.
- Infections: Yeast infections, pinworms, or other parasitic infections.
- Irritants: Such as soaps, lotions, or toilet paper.
