Heartburn – a burning sensation behind the breastbone or in the epigastrium, in the upper central part of the abdomen. This symptom is associated with the backflow of acidic stomach contents and irritation of the esophageal mucosa. Heartburn is the main symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
