Gastroesophageal reflux – the return of stomach contents back into the esophagus. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter opens to allow food into the stomach and then closes, preventing stomach juices from entering the esophagus. Weakness or improper relaxation of the sphincter causes gastroesophageal reflux disease.
