Flaking skin. Peeling – increased shedding of the superficial layer of the skin, epidermis. When the cells of the epidermal horny layer renew and change normally, peeling occurs unnoticed. Symptomatic peeling occurs when skin diseases, such as fungal infections, are present. The activity of the skin’s sebaceous glands is disrupted, leading to seborrhea. The flakes are large, resembling fish scales, separated from the reddened skin. The affected skin itches.
