During sleep, individuals with sleep apnea may experience breathing that stops for at least 10 seconds at a time. These events, known as apneas, can significantly reduce the quality of sleep. The body typically reacts to these pauses by briefly waking up to resume breathing, often leading to fragmented and disrupted sleep patterns. Over time, this can contribute to excessive daytime sleepiness and various health complications.
