Description:

A dry tongue with white plaque refers to the condition where the tongue feels dry and rough, and a white, sometimes thick, layer or coating appears on its surface. This symptom can indicate various underlying health issues and cause discomfort in the mouth.

Potential Causes:

  • Dehydration:

    • Not drinking enough fluids or conditions that cause excessive fluid loss.
  • Oral Thrush (Candidiasis):

    • A fungal infection caused by Candida, which results in white patches on the tongue and inside of the mouth.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene:

    • Irregular or improper brushing and flossing can lead to the buildup of bacteria and plaque.
  • Dry Mouth (Xerostomia):

    • Reduced saliva production, which can occur due to certain medications, medical conditions, or therapies like radiation.
  • Smoking and Alcohol Use:

    • Both can irritate the mouth and contribute to dryness and plaque formation.
  • Mouth Breathing:

    • Breathing through the mouth due to nasal congestion or other issues can dry out the tongue and promote plaque buildup.
