Bruises
Bruises, also known as contusions, appear as discolored patches on the skin resulting from minor trauma that causes small blood vessels—capillaries—to break and leak blood into surrounding tissues. Initially, bruises are reddish or purplish, then they may turn blue, green, yellow, or brown as they heal. Bruises can be tender or painful, and their size and severity depend on the extent of the injury. Common causes include bumps, falls, or impacts. Most bruises heal on their own within a few weeks, but unusually large or persistent bruises may require medical attention.
