A nodule with clear borders
Symptoms
Related diseases
A nodule with clear borders is a raised lesion on the skin that has well-defined, sharp edges. This means that the transition between the nodule and the surrounding skin is distinct and easily noticeable. The characteristics of such a nodule include:
- Defined Edges: The borders of the nodule are clearly demarcated from the surrounding skin.
- Uniform Shape: The nodule may be round, oval, or another regular shape, but the key feature is the distinct separation from the adjacent tissue.
- Color and Texture: The surface color and texture may vary, ranging from flesh-colored to pigmented, and from smooth to rough.
Possible Causes
- Seborrheic Keratosis: These benign growths often have well-defined borders and can appear anywhere on the body. They have a “stuck-on” look and can be light brown to black in color.
- Moles (Nevi): Typically benign, moles have clear edges and can be uniform in color. Changes in their appearance should be monitored.
- Dermatofibromas: Firm nodules that have clear borders and are usually less than 1 cm in diameter. They are commonly found on the legs.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma: This type of skin cancer often appears as a nodule with clear edges but may have a pearly appearance and telangiectasia (small visible blood vessels).
- Cysts: Such as epidermoid cysts, which are enclosed by a distinct wall and have clear borders.
Importance of Medical Evaluation
It’s important to consult a healthcare provider for a nodule with clear borders, especially if the nodule:
- Changes in size, shape, or color
- Becomes painful or itchy
- Starts to bleed or ooze
