Description
A cough suppressant with a central effect.
Indications
For the relief of dry cough.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan; respiratory insufficiency.
Dosage
For adults. Oral administration. 10-20 mg every 4 hours or 30 mg every 6-8 hours. Maximum dose – 120 mg per day.
For children. Oral administration. 2-6 years – 2.5-5 mg every 4 hours or 7.5 mg every 6-8 hours (not to exceed 30 mg per day), 6-12 years – 5-10 mg every 4 hours or 15 mg every 6-8 hours (not to exceed 60 mg per day).
Undesirable reactions
Most common: drowsiness, dizziness, increased nervousness, agitation, confusion; nausea, vomiting, constipation.
Others: dependency, allergic reactions.
Pregnancy
It is unknown whether the drug crosses the placental barrier, however, considering its molecular weight, it is believed to cross. Available data do not show an increased risk of birth defects with this drug.
Breastfeeding
There is no data on the use of the drug during breastfeeding. It is believed that products without ethanol in their composition are safe for breastfeeding mothers.
Warnings
Use with caution in asthma, impaired liver function, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers. Not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
