Drowning

DROWNING

Description
Every year in Lithuania, more than 300 people drown, and such incidents are increasing. There is a widespread belief that rescuing drowning victims is solely their responsibility, which can someday turn against us. Let’s try to change this mindset. Let’s all take care of it. Let’s learn to help a drowning person.

Classification and causes
When drowning, a small amount of water enters the respiratory tract, which can cause a spasm of the vocal cords, preventing the person from inhaling, leading to loss of consciousness and drowning.

First aid
Objectives:
1. Restore breathing and circulation.
2. Warm up the victim.
3. After drowning, medical supervision is necessary for at least 24 hours.

Actions
1. When removing the body from the water, keep the head lower to prevent water in the mouth from entering the airway.
2. Assess the breathing and circulation of the drowning victim.
3. If the victim is not breathing, start CPR. After resuscitation, lay the person in a stable side position.
4. If the patient does not respond but is breathing and you feel a pulse, lay them in a stable side position.
5. A drowning person is usually cold. To prevent further cooling:
• Remove wet clothes;
• Cover with a dry blanket;
• Give warm fluids to a conscious person.

Risks and notes
Do not try to remove water from the patient by pressing the abdomen or holding the person upside down.
If you are alone, start resuscitation with breaths, continue with CPR for 1 minute, and then call for help.
