The term renal tubular acidosis defines conditions where the secretion of acids into the urine or the absorption of bicarbonates from it in the renal tubules becomes disturbed. This disturbance leads to acidosis and a decrease in blood pH. Renal tubular acidosis rarely shows symptoms, but severe blood acidosis can impair breathing. Treatment for this condition involves alkali therapy and electrolyte correction. This condition occurs more commonly in children, individuals with diabetes mellitus, congenital liver cirrhosis, kidney stones, and those taking certain medications.
