Gender identity disorder
Gender identity disorder occurs when there is a dissonance between a person’s biological sex and their feeling of being a woman or a man. This dissonance often leads to dissatisfaction with oneself, with one’s life. The disorder is quite rare, so consultation with an experienced psychiatrist in this field is necessary. It most commonly manifests as dual transvestism or transsexualism. Most clinics treat transsexuals with hormones only when they change their social gender role and are adults, genital surgery is performed when two appropriate specialists agree and the patient is successfully living in the new gender role for at least a year.
